The music industry is in deep sorrow.
Rapper Ka passed away in New York City on October 12, as his family confirmed in a social media statement on October 14. He was 52 years old.
“With heavy hearts, we announce the loss of Kaseem Ryan (1972-2024), the rapper and producer known as Ka,” his family shared on Instagram. “Ka was born and raised in Brownsville, Brooklyn, and dedicated his life to serving his city, community, and music.”
As noted in their post, Ka was a dedicated member of the New York City Fire Department for 20 years, who “risked his life to safeguard his fellow citizens.”
In addition to his music career, the statement highlighted his role as a firefighter, noting that he ascended “to the position of FDNY captain and served as a first responder during the attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.”
“He leaves behind a remarkable legacy as a recording artist,” they elaborated, “which includes eleven outstanding self-released solo albums.”
