The Oura Ring leverages internal sensors to monitor an extensive range of over 30 health and wellness metrics, including key indicators such as heart rate and heart rate variability. Its sleep tracking capability is particularly notable, and many users have found that the Oura Gen3’s sleep recommendations greatly boost their energy levels for workouts.
One of the most significant upgrades in the Oura Ring 4 is the increase in sensors—from 8 in the Gen3 to 18 in the new version. This enhancement includes a feature termed “Smart Sensing,” which has demonstrated remarkable accuracy improvements in external evaluations. Users can expect a 7% reduction in gaps on the daytime heart rate graph and a remarkable 31% reduction in gaps on the nighttime heart rate graph. Fewer gaps indicate more constant monitoring, leading to more reliable data.
Holly Shelton, Chief Product Officer at Oura, commented on the new technology, stating, “With Smart Sensing, Oura Ring 4 respects the natural rotation of the ring during daily activities, as well as variations in finger shape, BMI, and skin tone,” as mentioned in a press release.
The Oura Ring 4 is available in sizes ranging from 4 to 15, ensuring a wider fit for users. Both the outer and inner components of the ring are constructed from titanium for enhanced durability. It has a slimmer profile, decreasing in thickness by approximately 0.02mm. The device now boasts an extended battery life, allowing users to wear it for up to eight days without interruption.
Alongside the release of the Oura Ring 4, a revamped app layout has been introduced, designed to simplify the vast amount of data provided by the ring. In addition to standard metrics such as sleep and activity, the ring tracks aspects like stress levels, resilience, women’s health, and heart health. Notably, Oura also plans to expand its focus to metabolic health. The improved app features a cleaner design with three distinct sections accessible via tabs: Today, Vitals, and My Health.
“As we’ve introduced new features and capabilities in the past year, navigating the Oura App became increasingly complex,” Shelton explained. “This redesign allows the app to connect the dots, assisting Oura members in understanding how daily habits—like aerobic activity and sleep patterns—impact their long-term health. It encourages users to adopt changes that will yield benefits later in life.”
The updated app is available to all Oura Ring users, regardless of the generation of the ring. The rollout begins immediately.
Beyond the purchase price of the ring, which includes a one-month membership, users will need to consider the membership fee of $5.99 per month or $69.99 annually.
