Dominique Francis showcased his fierce potential as a rising star in professional boxing with a sensational body shot last weekend in Stockton, California. The unexpected and devastating blow left spectators in awe as Francis, at just 23 years old, stunned Mexico’s Julio Carrera Lugo, floor him in the fourth round of their match-up between unbeaten fighters.

Francis, a junior lightweight hailing from Miami, has been honing his skills under the guidance of renowned coach Derik Santos.

Known for his work with titleholders such as Chris Algieri, Santos believes this impressive victory may mark the beginning of an exciting journey for Francis.

I’ve had him since right before he turned pro, and I knew he had a lot of potential, He’s grown into his body—he started at 122, then 126, and now this is his first fight at 130.

Santos shared. He noted Francis’s physical evolution over the years

Overcoming obstacles early in his career, Francis faced injuries and the impact of COVID-19, which cost him a year of competition. Santos emphasized, “Consistency was all we needed, and we’re finding that now.”

Reflecting on Francis’s recent development, Santos recalled a pivotal match earlier this year against Mexican journeyman Uriel Lopez Juarez (15-19-1, 7 KOs). The duo fought in Mexico City, adapting to the altitude conditions. “We went the distance and it was a valuable experience,” Santos explained. “Today, I felt he was tuned in to what we needed—great boxing, seizing opportunities, and demonstrating his skills. He did just that.”

Francis’s knockout punch—a perfectly executed body shot that rendered Lugo incapable of recovery—has opened doors for greater opportunities. Santos has set a timeline of “two, maybe three” more fights before Francis could step into a major bout. Currently, Francis operates as a free agent, allowing for exciting prospects in his career.

So, what distinguishes the undefeated Francis (16-0, 10 KOs) from the rest? Santos confidently pointed out, “He’s got a great sense of defense and blazing speed.”

With such attributes, there’s no doubt that Dominique Francis is a fighter to watch as he continues his ascent in the boxing arena.
