Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag made a noteworthy statement when addressing his role at Old Trafford. The 51-year-old has been under increasing pressure following a slow start to the season. However, his team’s recent 2-1 victory over Brentford, marked by goals from Alejandro Garnacho and Rasmus Hojlund, provided a much-needed lift.

With a crucial match against Fenerbahce approaching, the scrutiny on Ten Hag’s position remains high, particularly if the team fails to secure a win in Turkey. Despite the pressure, the former Ajax manager maintained a relatively upbeat demeanor while responding to inquiries about his situation.

During the Football Writers’ Association dinner in Manchester, Ten Hag challenged SunSport journalist Neil Custis to consider stepping into his shoes for a day. Custis, known for his candid opinions and years of covering Manchester United, often critiques Ten Hag’s decisions, particularly in light of recent performances.

“I just spoke with one friend of mine in Germany. He said, ‘Maybe you have to suggest one of the football writers change jobs for two weeks…'” Ten Hag remarked, drawing laughter from the audience. Ten Hag then jokingly asked Custis if he was eager to face Jose Mourinho in Istanbul, to which Custis responded affirmatively.

Manchester United has yet to secure a win in the Europa League this season, having drawn their first two matches against FC Twente and Porto. In his remarks at the FWA event, Ten Hag acknowledged the early struggles of the season: “At United, we are just starting the season. It has not been a good beginning. We know that, and we’re not happy, but we were pleased with yesterday’s comeback win. Yet, it’s just one win.”

Developing a Winning Team At Manchester United

Ten Hag emphasized the importance of consistent performance, stating, “If you want to win trophies, you must do it consistently and maintain good performances throughout the season. However, trophies are not won in autumn, winter, or even spring—it’s in April and May when it truly counts. Our goal is to ensure the team is winning consistently, especially as the season draws to a close. We must develop a squad capable of competing for trophies.”

As Manchester United prepares for their coming matches, the emphasis will be on building momentum and solidifying their performance as they look towards the remainder of the season.
