Liverpool is preparing to make a significant change in their squad, eyeing a new left-back that may not sit well with fans. Under new manager Arne Slot, the team has achieved great success, currently leading the Premier League and winning both of their opening Champions League fixtures. However, there are underlying issues within the squad, particularly with key players nearing the end of their contracts.

Reports from Portuguese outlet O Jogo indicate that Liverpool has expressed strong interest in Benfica left-back Alvaro Carreras, viewing him as a long-term successor to fan-favourite Andy Robertson. The Reds are allegedly considering activating Carreras’ €50 million release clause. Since arriving at Benfica in a €9 million deal this summer, the young defender has made a promising start.
Carreras, who previously joined Manchester United in 2020 but never made a competitive first-team appearance, could be a contentious signing due to his ties to rivals. He is known for his attacking style, which aligns well with the role at Liverpool. While Robertson remains a key player at 30 years old, his injury struggles last season limited him to just three goals and two assists—significantly lower than his usual output of double-figure goal contributions across previous seasons.

Despite speculation about Carreras, Robertson has started seven of Liverpool’s ten matches this season and appears to be revitalized under Slot’s management. With his contract running until 2026, it’s clear that the club is still invested in him, expecting he will be a vital player for at least a few more seasons.
In the view of FourFourTwo, the €50 million price tag for Carreras might seem excessive considering his current market value of approximately €8 million, as cited by Transfermarkt. At this stage, finding a left-back may not be the immediate priority for Liverpool. The focus may instead need to shift towards securing new deals for key players like Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk, and Mohamed Salah, or planning for their potential successors.
If Carreras were to join Liverpool, he might serve primarily as backup to Robertson, who has not faced serious competition from Kostas Tsimikas since arriving at Anfield.
In conclusion, as Liverpool navigates potential squad changes, the club must carefully consider its strategy and investments while maintaining a focus on team stability and priority areas for improvement.
