Is Phil Foden’s Struggles for England a Telltale Sign of Deeper Issues Within the National Team? Recent discussions have surfaced about why the talented player, often celebrated for his performances with Manchester City, seems to falter when representing the England team. In today’s analysis, we will explore the discrepancies between Foden’s club and country performances, the emerging talents on the national stage, and the critique directed towards manager Lee Carsley.
The Foden Dilemma: Club versus Country
Phil Foden, hailed as the Premier League’s Player of the Season, has not replicated that success on the international stage. As highlighted in recent statistics, it has been over a year since Foden has scored or assisted in an England shirt, a striking contrast to his dazzling displays for Manchester City. Critics point to the fact that while Foden has been instrumental for his club, he seems disconnected within the national setup. Why is it that the same player who dazzles at the Etihad Stadium appears subdued in international fixtures?
Emerging Talent: Cole Palmer’s Impact
Adding to the narrative is Cole Palmer, a rising star in England’s youth ranks, whose performance has raised expectations among fans and analysts alike. Some believe Palmer could take on a pivotal role within the squad as England seeks a fresh approach. As England transitions and integrates younger players, the pressure is on established stars like Foden to find their footing amidst changing dynamics. Is England’s future dependent on these new talents, or can seasoned players still lead the charge?
Lee Carsley’s Approach to Team Building
Under Lee Carsley, the head coach of England’s U21 squad now stepping up to manage the senior team, there has been a blend of youth and experience. He is praised for promoting confident young players who have excelled at various levels. However, there is hesitance among some observers about whether he’s the right person to guide England’s aspirations for success on the world stage. Supporters of Carsley argue that his familiarity with younger players is beneficial for future tournaments. As noted, he’s entrusted players who have proven themselves at the U21 level, but a significant question looms: Can he translate that success with age-graded squads to the senior team?
Systematic Differences Affecting Performance
Another critical factor in Foden’s inconsistency is the contrasting systems he operates within. While Manchester City’s style is well-established, with Foden ingrained in Pep Guardiola’s tactical plans, the England setup appears less cohesive. When he joins the national side, Foden isn’t always sure of his role or how to navigate the discrepancies in playing styles. Supporters lament that such a brilliant talent is not being utilized to his full potential when playing for England. Is it fair to scrutinize him when the systemic differences are so pronounced?
Final Thoughts
As we traverse the world of international football, it’s clear that the challenges faced by players like Phil Foden are multifaceted. The discrepancies between club and country performances reflect deeper systemic issues within the national team framework. With emerging talents like Cole Palmer poised for prominence and a new managerial approach under Lee Carsley, England might just be on the brink of evolving their footballing identity. However, the pressing question remains: Can the established stars overcome their struggles and rise to the occasion for the Three Lions? How can Foden and his teammates adjust to reclaim their form on the international stage?

He is an awful player for england.
Pep is a poor coach….cole Palmer is a proof
The problem with England is that they need to have all the best players playing together at the same time which is not feasible. Had the same problem with Lampard, Gerrard and Scholes. Create a team that plays the best football rather than best players. Play players that deliver like Kane, Bellingham, Saka. Not cater to Foden. Let him earn his place.
He's massively overrated. Pure system player and Man City had everyone fooled into thinking he's great. He's not.
He ain't on Musiala, Wirtz, Pedri, Jude or Saka's level, instead he's more like Steven Ireland.
City are doomed when KDB leaves (which could be next season as he's in his last year)
Is simple because of Bellingham, Bellingham should play his own position and Phil as a number 10 only, no double 10 with Jude
System player
Palmer is disrespected and earned that 10 spot the last year even in the tournament. Had the biggest impact in the least minutes. Big names need to be dropped like it or not. Watkins starts over kane and Bellingham/foden dropped
The problem is in City, team was built around Foden while in England team, team was built around Harry Kane so nobody in England shirt will do well if the team is built for Kane.
My suggestion to Kane is his record has been already good enough to be withhold for the forseeable future so he doesn't need to keep pushing for his individual record at the expense of the team. Harry you should be better retire from national team and let the youngster do their job. Just follow Trippier retired with respected way.
Foden is not world
Nowhere near
How can we call Foden world class if he can’t and has never performed for his country whilst all his colleagues have contributed in some way
The first guy doesn't even answer the question and barely talks about Foden.
He’s an outstanding player no doubt but not world class!
Otherwise wouldn’t struggle scoring or assisting for England in over 15 months and playing in a different system other than Pep’s
Phil should be on the bench this evening. Kane up front and Bellingham No.10. Not sure that Carsley is the right choice on a permanent basis
Bellingham and Saka get a pass simply because the only difference between them and Foden is one goal…
Pure nonsense. This applies to every player who leaves their club and go on international duty. Yamal, kane and they have performed with their national teams. Why is it different for Foden. What do you mean because he's away from city. Are you saying he can't be transferred because he wouldn't be under Pep therefore his levels would drop. Because I think that's exactly what Bent is saying which then would lead one to think he's not that good really, because a big player is a big player. No matter where you play
Nothing has gone wrong. Its just Englands training stab who dont want to use him or give him play time.. its rubbish of them
They keep making excuses for him. It's crazy, drop him and give someone else a chance, its ridiculous. 15 games since he last contributed anything in international football is CRAZY
As an Arsenal I say drop Saka and play the inconsistent Foden and Palmer. Hyping players who turn up for 1 season then disappear is a reason England will. Never win anything.
In football there are players who are just club players, country players and both
Examples
Foden- is just a club player
Romero- only plays well for Country
Saka- plays well for both club and country
I don't believe changing a team to accommodate players, the player should either adapt style or be able to play in multiple positions to be accommodated
Foden was never world class. Everybody just thinks that because he's in the best team in the world. Nowhere near Palmer. Not even close to Saka.
The thing is that Foden has been playing for England longer than both Bellingham and Palmer and has at best been bang average. A world class forward player does not go 15 games without scoring or assisting and being anonymous throughout. He looks world class under the best manager in the world, but under more average management he's nowhere near world class, so overall it makes him highly overrated.
Give me consistency (Saka) over moments of dazzle (Palmar + Foden) any day of the week
The manager is the problem . Carsley has been the manager for four games now and his has looked impressive for only 45 minutes in the first game against Ireland . The second half england were dreadful . Ireland playing england far too easily same as greece did and finland did tonight .
Carsley is lucky that his team was drawn in such a poor group .Greece are the only team of quality that they have faced and they were embarassed by them . Ireland and finland while two teams of poor quality were able to create clear cut chances .
It's far to easy for team to get at their back four . I don't see it changing either because it looks like Carsley doesn't know how to change . I think Greece will do the double over England and win the group .
Golden is world class when he only shows up for city but saka who constantly does it for club and country is not
you can't make excuses for players because theyre playing in different teams
Players from the north much like many fans here couldn't give a monkeys about england. Carra and Neville cared about their clubs way more, Gerrard, Rooney and Trent had to be forced to sing the anthem. Phil loves his club more so we see the best of him there. Good for him. Ben White shows it isn't just the north now😁
SS is so shite these days. Infact sky has had a massive drop in quality
He can't be world class if he can't play well consistently for for England now can he???!
Why do you guys jump on other peoples stories?
One article about foden and you like vampires at a bloodbank
The dude had the most negative manager for years and the team chops and changes
Media need some integrity
He’s been found out by having world class players along side him at City similar when lampard was playing for Chelsea stick to fishing
Has never had a good game for England. He might come good but we need to stop forcing him into the starting XI.
Palmer is just the same as foden for England he's no better. Last 2 games proved that
He hasn’t ever been used properly for England because we haven’t had a good manager yet. Simple as that
He has been in the England set up for years now how does he still not know how to play in it???
Other players come straight in and do well and if they dont they stop getting called up. Foden is a good player who can only play for one type of team and in one system with elite players around him.
Lmao so long story short foden is a system player
He loves his club more, so we'll obviously see him at his best in there
Because he’s a great club player who excels in a specific structure & particular system created by Pep. He’s not versatile, he’s not robust and ultimately he’s overrated. Good player though.
He is not good enough to adapt
Sad little people wait for a bad performance just to complain… Foden could score a hatrick against france then not do well against a team like denmark and people will say he is bad
This obsession over foden is crazy considering england have superior talents in bellingham, saka, trent, and palmer.
‘ hE’s A sYsTeM PlaYeR’
Guardiola tells him exactly what to do and where to play. For England he needs to think for himself.
He is used to the Royal protection when he plays football,
without the Royal protection from the Refs. he just gets bullied,
I've been saying this man: City players outside of City are sitting ducks. the only exceptions are Rodri and De Bruyne.
No, Darren is not so if a sudden, he's played nearly 50 games & done nothing. & what a b/s, excuse, cole, ska, harry… all had the same problems, they perform for country
Paul scholes was exactly the same he never played as well for England as he did for utd
