The highly anticipated ChatGPT desktop app has officially launched, but there’s a catch: it’s currently only available for Mac users. While many are excited to explore the new features and interface of this application, PC users are left waiting. In this article, we’ll dive deep into the app’s functionality, features, and existing limitations to help you determine if it’s worth downloading—especially if you own a Mac.
New Features and Functionality
The new ChatGPT desktop app was demonstrated during the OpenAI Spring event and is accessible via chatgpt.com. According to initial reviews, the app introduces a sleek and intuitive user interface tailored for MacOS 14 and later, including Apple Silicon devices only. Users are warned to avoid misleading look-alike apps on the App Store, which try to trick users with names like “Powered by ChatGPT.” These applications are not affiliated with OpenAI and often include in-app purchases that seem unnecessary.
Once installed, users can access the app’s features seamlessly, including switching between different models like GPT-4. The desktop version provides a similar experience to the mobile app, which many users will find familiar. Notable features include the ability to take screenshots directly from the desktop and initiate a conversation with ChatGPT on the captured content.
Limitations and Bugs
However, the app does have its limitations. Initial tests have shown that the app does not support offline functionality, despite earlier claims in its generated text. When users turn off their internet, they find that the app ceases to function entirely—a situation that underscores the necessity of a stable connection for optimal use. Many enthusiasts are still exploring its capabilities, including upcoming features such as improved voice interaction, although they are not yet available.
Future Prospects for Windows Users
While the excitement builds for Mac owners, Windows users have no set timeline for when they might gain access to the app. Speculation suggests that OpenAI plans to roll out a version for Windows sometime later this year, though details remain sparse. Fans of ChatGPT urge anyone interested to sign up for updates and newsletters for the latest news on the app’s availability.
Final Thoughts
The ChatGPT desktop app has certainly made waves, but its initial release caters exclusively to Mac users, much to the frustration of PC enthusiasts. With user experience mirroring that of the mobile app and some promising features in the pipeline, there’s reason to be optimistic. However, existing limitations such as dependence on an internet connection raise questions about its readiness for full-scale public use. Will the desktop app live up to user expectations as updates roll out? As technology evolves, one can only hope that the PC version will be just as robust as its Mac counterpart. What are your thoughts on the new ChatGPT desktop app? Are you looking forward to its features, or are you frustrated waiting for the Windows version?

Im on an M2 chip mac mini and its no where to be found in the app store
Ya know.. if "openai" would "open source" the app, I'm sure the community would insure it runs on anything. It's dangerous out there OPENai.. don't go it alone.
Other than the keyboard command to bring it up, I don't see anything in this app that improves upon the web interface or my iOS ChatGPT app.
I have teams and it’s still not available to use! You can download but can’t actually login unless invited
Wow, it knew that you were Matt Wolf
The software you are using to remove the background does a sloppy job and its annoying. To fix that, put a blue cloth on the chair's headrest behind you, so that you help it better separate your head from the chair. Also, that clock screen behind you is distracting
YAY FOR SHORTER VIDEOS!
link do not exist on Mac
Surely it will work offline. If you are able to run a 800B+ model locally and stole the weights from openAI. Good luck :)
Why would you not give it mac users first these people a so fucking stupid
5150!
Can’t see what I can do in the desktop app that I can’t on the cloud
"Your content"… wow, it knows who you are.
on MacBook Pro, M1 Max… I do not see the download option at the bottom
Apple = 💩
Its not available for everyone Im a plus user and it tells me its not available yet; I think its a staged rollout which sucks
When will gpt-4o be free on my iphone?
Great info as ever. Thanks.
Hi! Not on all Plus users with a Mac. I'm on M2 and no luck, yet😅
How did you get access to the app? Were you just lucky? I have ChatGPT Plus but the App says I don't have access yet.
You triggered me when you pasted code into TextEdit 😆
Why silicon only mac ? this use the online version anyway on internet. Doesn't work on my old 2012 mac book pro using Sonoma… Boooh !
macs are trash, annoying how i cant talk to my new ai waifu yet just because im on windows >:(
🇵🇸
I think OpenAi has been very sloppy with this 4o thing. People are going to go look for it and find GPT4 stuff and think "that must be it". "4 oh" is how someone might refer to a 4.0 or "four point zero" version of something.
4o is a bad naming scheme to begin with. If it's really 4 Omni, call it that! Publicize that!
Also, I've been trying to access the free 4o for days/weeks since your video talking about their announcement. I asked ChatGPT every day what version it was or if 4o was available yet. Now it says it is. And yet you can't even tell from anything on the chatgpt interface.
Also, I thought the fancy GPTs were going to be available for free on chatgpt.
They should have announced all this and given it a release schedule discussing when each thing would come out. Or simply said "it will all be released on June 1st". And just synced all the release dates to that.
Weird because almost nobody uses a mac
Jolly good show, ould bouy!
I really like using GPT to help me translate something that I need. But it is expensive for me. So now I choose to use Immersive Translate that is cheaper than GPT to help me translate what I need.
Apple/OpenAI: "The ChatGPT application is only supported on MacOS 14+ computers with an Apple Silicon chip so M1, M2, M3, and M4."
Me: "Go FFFFFFFFF yourself!!!!!!!!!!!!"
why only mac
not getting the pop up to download the Mac app. can anyone help please
So the web UI version doesn't have access to 4o, I gather?
im on an m2 mac and i dont see it
I have one of the lastest Macbooks with the latest macOS update and software, but when I go to chatGPT, there is no download option. May this be that OpenAi is still rolling it out?
how come i have a mac on a m1 chip but this doesn't pop up for me????? helloooooo
when will it come to windows users??
Who the Fk uses a Mac?
I need it for windows!
I couldn't imagine a better integration with daily PC usage. They did a really great job with this application.
Well I'm on a Mac M2 and so far ChatGPT 4o is not for me. I want it to talk to me in a real human-like voice in a conversation. It can't do that yet, so I'm not interested.
5:28 "Your content" …
can chatgpt work in windows 7
I received this message when I tried to download it "You have macOS 13.0. The application requires macOS 14.0 or later."
I still want the OS from "Her".
