Being drafted into the NBA is a moment that every aspiring player dreams of, a culmination of years of dedication and hard work. This dream became a reality for Carlton “Bub” Carrington when he was selected 14th overall by the Portland Trail Blazers. However, in a twist of fate, he was soon informed that he would be traded to the Washington Wizards, a team that holds special significance for him as it represents his home state. Bub couldn’t help but feel a whirlwind of emotions as he processed this rapid change in his career.

Located just a 40-minute drive northeast of Capital One Arena lies Baltimore, where Carrington’s basketball journey began. Opportunities are rare and hard-earned in a city known for its gritty and competitive basketball culture. As Carrington describes, making a name for oneself in Baltimore is challenging; it’s all about securing a spot on a coveted team or in a respected school. He emphasizes, “You’re trying to make that one team, you’re trying to go to that school, trying to be in that area.”

The environment in Baltimore has undeniably shaped Carrington’s relentless drive and tenacity on the court. He acknowledges, “In some way, shape or form, [you’re] a product of your environment.” His competitiveness and determination to excel against any opponent are central to his approach to basketball. Bub believes every game is a battle against a long-time rival or a newcomer. These rivalries have played a significant role in his development, showcasing his fierce drive and skill.

Among the many rivalries that shaped his high school years, one stands out: Bub’s competition with Johnathan Lamothe, a top prospect at St. Francis Academy. Carrington recalls, “He blew up big,” this intense rivalry pushed him to sharpen his skills. Recognizing that he wasn’t yet in the spotlight, Bub was determined to prove himself, often focusing on competing with Lamothe. Following his father’s advice, which emphasized the importance of actively challenging his peers, Bub approached every opportunity with the mindset to go after his competition.

Your upbringing can influence your perspective in meaningful ways. Carrington’s father, Carlton Carrington II, is an esteemed local AAU coach whose coaching insights gave Bub a unique advantage. As Bub reflects, “You see the game from a different perspective, from a coach’s perspective. A lot of kids see from a coach’s perspective for an hour… I see it every hour of the day.” This familial dynamic is not without its challenges; the traditional coach-player boundary can be blurred but ultimately strengthens their relationship. Bub learned to appreciate his father’s guidance, noting, “I stopped trying to think I’m smarter than him. He knows what he’s doing.”

Today, Carrington is a formidable 6-4 guard capable of masterful mid-range shots and effective pick-and-roll plays. He embraces all aspects of the game, including the less glamorous elements, all in pursuit of becoming the best player for his team.

Despite Baltimore’s fierce competitive spirit, a strong sense of community is equally present. Every aspiring basketball player in Baltimore is eager to claim the title of the best, and when one of their own rises to prominence, the city celebrates their success as a collective achievement. Carrington’s ascent to the NBA brings heightened pride to the community, and he is committed to giving back to the city that fostered his growth as a player.

In anticipation of his first game with the Wizards, Bub has already taken steps to engage with the community through various charitable initiatives. He actively participates in back-to-school drives and Thanksgiving food drives while also planning community projects alongside his teammates. “I’m trying to be a voice. I’m trying actually to be active in the community,” he affirms, emphasizing his dedication to helping others. “I like helping people. I help people because I was helped.”
